Strategies for a successful retirement
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027, giving beneficiaries their largest annual increase since 2023. The adjustment will take effect in January, raising monthly payments for eligible retirees.
However, while the increase will provide additional income, it may not be enough to cover the rising cost of everyday necessities. And because benefits adjust after inflation has already affected household budgets, some retirees may continue to feel financial pressure.
How the 2027 Social Security Increase Is Calculated
Social Security's annual COLA is tied to inflation, using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). This index tracks price changes for a specific segment of the population and does not always mirror the inflation figures commonly reported in the news.
The SSA compares the CPI-W for the third quarter of the current year with the same period a year earlier. The resulting percentage change determines the COLA, rounded to the nearest tenth of a percentage point.
For 2027, that calculation produced a 3.6% increase in benefits.

Estimated Monthly Benefits From Age 62 to 70
The amount retirees receive varies according to factors such as their earnings history and when they claim benefits. Based on the SSA's June 2026 average-benefit figures, the following table illustrates how a 3.6% increase could affect monthly payments.
Age | Current Average Monthly Benefit | Estimated Monthly Benefit in 2027 |
|---|---|---|
62 | $1,451.50 | $1,503.75 |
63 | $1,461.49 | $1,514.10 |
64 | $1,498.03 | $1,551.96 |
65 | $1,629.44 | $1,688.10 |
66 | $1,801.98 | $1,866.85 |
67 | $2,037.51 | $2,110.86 |
68 | $2,071.77 | $2,146.35 |
69 | $2,103.13 | $2,178.84 |
70 | $2,264.98 | $2,346.52 |

These figures show that the dollar increase differs depending on the size of a person's existing benefit. An average 62-year-old could receive approximately $52.25 more per month, adding up to about $627 annually. For an average 70-year-old, the increase could be roughly $81.54 per month, or $978.48 over a full year.
Benefits generally increase with age in part because claiming before full retirement age reduces payments, while delaying claims beyond full retirement age can increase them. Differences in earnings records and previously applied COLAs also affect average benefit amounts.
How to Find Your New Benefit Amount
Beneficiaries can estimate their increase by multiplying their current monthly payment by 0.036. Adding that amount to the existing benefit gives an estimate of the new payment.
The SSA is also expected to send personalized benefit notices in December, outlining the new payment amount and any Medicare premium deductions.
It's important to remember that the table provides averages, not guaranteed payments for individual retirees. Actual benefits will depend on each person's circumstances, and deductions may affect the amount deposited into their account.
Why the Increase May Not Be Enough
Although the 2027 adjustment will provide welcome relief, retirees could still face a gap between benefit increases and their actual living expenses. Housing, groceries, utilities, healthcare and other essentials can put significant pressure on a fixed income.
Another concern is timing. Prices may rise well before the higher Social Security payments begin, leaving beneficiaries to cover the difference with savings or by cutting spending.
